Landscapes (working title)

Argentina

I photograph the wide Argentine emptiness — the sea, the salt flat, the dune, the plain — and the small upright things people leave standing in it: a fence, a line of pilings, a post. They are how a hand measures a space too large to hold.

The camera is a 12×20 contact negative, heavy enough that I only open it when the place has already decided the picture. Its slowness is the point: it turns looking into waiting.
